The Institute of Biochemistry of the German Sport University Cologne is one of the oldest doping laboratories in the world. The founder and first director of the Institute was Prof. Manfred Donike, a pioneer in doping analytics and a member of the Medical Commission of the IOC. 

Prof. Donike directed the Institute from 1977 until 1995.  Today, the Institute is accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and is directed by Prof. Dr. Mario Thevis. The focus of the Institute is preventive doping research, sport nutrition research and doping analytics. Every year the Institute analyses approximately 16,000 human and 3,000 horse doping samples.  For its research areas, the Institute has a broad spectrum of the newest analytical techniques and makes regular ground-breaking contributions to the development of doping analytics, helped in particular by its many years of experience in mass spectrometry.

The Manfred Donike Institute for Doping Analytics is affiliated with the Institute. It is a leading member of the Centre for Preventive Doping Research (ZePräDo), a central scientific facility at the German Sport University.
