How is and was work represented and perceived in society? As a source of pride and future orientation, but also as a place of misery, physical effort, subordination and exploitation. With its interdisciplinary approach, this scholarly anthology directs attention to places, media and figures in the representation of work.
Industrial activities, the "old" labour movement, but also more recent phenomena such as the precarious employment of highly qualified workers or the invoked end of the working society are examined - the relationships between individuals and collectives, between subjects and objects, between models and images. Political, visual and narrative representations of work in the 20th century will be examined from a historical perspective.
