Fingerprints
For optimal use of the Fingerprints in database and research portal
The so-called Fingerprints are a feature that uses a thesaurus to automatically generate research fields and associated keywords and assign them to a Researcher, a Research unit, a Publication, a Project, etc. This is done exclusively on the basis of text resources in the CRIS database, which are available in English. The keywords assigned to the individual research fields are also provided with percentages of how strongly the respective keyword is linked to the research of a Researcher, a Research unit, resp. to the content of a Publication, a Project, etc. The fingerprints are currently generated for the following data types:
- Persons (CRIS database) resp. Researchers (CRIS portal);
- Organisations (CRIS database) resp. Research units (CRIS portal);
- Publications;
- Projects;
- Prizes;
- Research infrastructure.
The Fingerprints in the form of research fields and keywords can be found in the CRIS database in the mask of each Person/Researcher, each Organisation/Research unit, each Publication, each Project etc. under the tab “Fingerprints”. There, their content composition can be checked and controlled. Here it is possible to activate and deactivate entire research fields together with their keywords and/or to deactivate or reactivate individual keywords by click. In the CRIS portal, only those research fields and keywords are displayed in entries of Researchers, Research units, Publications, Projects, etc. that are switched on or activated in the CRIS database.
Below, for each of the six data types, it is outlined which text resources need to be present in English in the CRIS database in order to make the best use of this feature to raise the profile of research.
The text resources for generating the fingerprints of:
Persons / Researchers
Data types whose English-language text resources are used to generate Fingerprints of Persons/Researchers if the person in question is linked to the respective data entry (e.g. as an author, as a project leader, as prize recipient, etc.):
- Publications,
- Projects,
- Prizes,
- Activities.
English-language text resources of the above-mentioned data types that are automatically used to generate fingerprints of Persons/Researchers:
- Title,
- Abstract,
- Keywords,
- Project description,
- Prize description,
- Activity description.
Important: In the case of publications, only those of your publications whose entries in the CRIS database have title and abstract in English will automatically be taken into account when generating your Fingerprints.
Special case of English-language text resources in personal data entries in the CRIS database:
All text resources that you enter in English in your personal data entry as a Researcher under “Curriculum and research description” as so-called “profile information” in the field marked with a British flag are also considered when generating your personal Fingerprints. Please refer to the information on the page of the data type “Researchers” in this helpdesk under “Metadata → Curriculum and research description”.
Recommendations
- Make absolutely sure that your Publication entries in the CRIS database also include the abstracts; and in the case of a German-language publication, that an English translation of the title and abstract is entered under the “Translation” tab.
- Make sure that your Projects, Prizes and Activities in the CRIS database also have an English-language title and an English-language project, prize or activity description under the “Translation” tab.
Organisations / Research units
Data types whose English-language text resources are used to generate Fingerprints of Organisations/Research units if the research organisation in question is specified as an organisational affiliation or as a managing organisational unit in the respective CRIS database entry:
- Publications,
- Projects,
- Prizes,
- Activities
- Research infrastructure.
English-language text resources of the above-mentioned data types that are automatically used to generate Fingerprints of Organisations/Research units:
For Publications:
- Title,
- Abstract,
- Keywords.
Important: In the case of publications, only those publications whose entries in the CRIS database have title and abstract in English will automatically be taken into account when generating the Fingerprints of an Organisation/Research unit.

- Project title,
- Project description,
- all relevant English-language text resources of the following data entries linked to the project in its CRIS database entry:
