Network

For optimal use of the network features in database and research portal

The network feature, which consists of several tools, serves to visualise the international, national and university-internal networking of Researchers, Research units and the university as a whole; this with regard to current research achievements of the last five years and primarily on the basis of Publications and Projects from this period. The visualisation takes place exclusively in the CRIS portal. The network feature consists of the following tools:

  • Network map,
  • Network diagrams,
  • List of partner Researchers,
  • List of partner Research units.

In the following, the functions of each tool of the network feature are presented and information is provided on which settings must be made in the CRIS database in order to be able to use the individual tools optimally.

Functions:

The Network map is a tool that uses a world map to visualise the international networking of a Researcher, a Research unit or the university as a whole. This visualisation is realised through dots placed on the world map, each of which can stand for a country or, in the case of the USA and Canada, also for a state or province.

By clicking on the dots, it is possible to find out which joint publications and/or projects the respective Researcher, Research unit or the university as a whole has published and/or successfully applied for and worked on together with international partners from the displayed countries in the last five years. After clicking on a country point, the individual external Research units and a link to the current joint publications and projects of the last five years are displayed.

You can find the Network map in the CRIS portal in your personal entry or the entry of your Research unit under “Overview” and under “Network → Network map”. The global network map of the university as a whole can be found on the starting page of the CRIS portal.

Settings:

  1. Turn on and off: You can turn the tool on and off in the CRIS database at any time. The global network map will then no longer be displayed in your personal data entry or the data entry of your Research unit in the CRIS portal. However, the data used for the function of this tool from your publications and projects will continue to be used to generate the global network map of the university as a whole.
    • Persons / Researchers: You turn the display of the global network map on and off in your personal data entry in the CRIS database under “Portal profile → Collaboration map”.
    • Organisations / Research units: You turn the display of the global network map on and off in the organisation data entry of your Research unit in the CRIS database under “Portal configurations → Collaboration map”.
  2. Data quality: In order for the network map to accurately reflect the international networking of your research, it is very important, especially in the case of your international publications, projects, etc., that you make sure that your partners are always correctly linked to their international Research unit or organisation (affiliation) under “Authors” or “Persons and organisational affiliations” in the respective database mask. Please note here the instructions under “General information → Affiliations of external Researchers” on the starting page of the CRIS-Helpdesk. Please also note here the instructions under “Researchers → Portal profile → Collaboration map” on the CRIS-Helpdesk.
