Abstract of lecture presented at the Manfred-Donike-Workshop 19th Cologne
Workshop on Dope Analysis 18th till 23rd March 2001
Since 1999 we have started to analyse "non-hormonal" nutritional supplements for prohormones. Up to now we have analysed about 153 different "non-hormonal" supplements. Most of the results were achieved in studies, which were performed in connection with positive doping cases for norandrosterone. In these cases we have analysed the supplements of positive athletes. When not declared prohomones were found, new original packed containers have been bought and analysed too.
Aliquots of the supplements were analysed by gas-chromatography/ mass-spectrometry for the following anabolic-androgenic steroids: 19-nor-4-androstene-3ß,17ß-diol, 19-nor-5-androstene-3ß,17ß-diol, 19-nor-4-androstene-3,17-dione, 19-nortestosterone, 4-androstene-3ß,17ß-diol, 5-androstene-3ß,17ß-diol, 4-androstene-3,17-dione, DHEA and testosterone.
Up to now 18 different "non-hormonal" nutritional supplement-products from 12 different companies were identified, which were contaminated with prohormones, not declared on the label. In most cases the contaminations were found in different charges of the same supplement, so that the total number of supplement containers with contaminated products is much higher.
15 of the 18 products contained 19-norsteroids (4-norandrostendione, 4-norandro-stendiole and 5-norandrostenediole). The contaminations were found in supplements of different content and matrices. We found them in capsules, tablets, powders, oily solutions and drinking ampoules. The declared contents were creatine, carnitine, zinc, pyruvate, ribose, glutamine, vitamines and minerals, tribulus terrestris, chrysin, CLA and other oils, guarana, OKG, and BCAA.
Excretion studies with the supplements, contaminated with prohormones of 19-nortestosterone, led in most cases to positive results for norandrosterone (norandrosterone above cut off limit).
