The Story of the Rings

In his functions as president of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee and member of the IOC Olympic Education Commission, Stephan Wassong was invited for an interview by a well-known German radio station (Südwestrundfunk/SWR). Stephan Wassong was asked to talk about the origins of the Olympic rings, Pierre de Coubertin`s ideas behind the symbol and its meaning. He informed the audience that the rings represent the five continents whose nations were represented in the Olympic Movement when the Olympic flag was made official by the IOC in 1914, although the colours of the rings do not stand for the continents. In addition, Stephan Wassong explained the strong visibility of the Olympic rings as a worldwide symbol with a recognition level of over 90%, which is comparable to that of the Red Cross and the logo of Coca-Cola.
